Museums & Historical Sites
American Farm Heritage Museum
The American Farm Heritage Museum is dedicated to preserving the farm heritage that built this country. Located on 40 acres, the museum sponsors a large 3-day festival every year that showcases tractors, demonstrations from the past, along with many other activities. Special events include: Spring Fling Festival in May, Heritage Days the last weekend in July, Halloweenville weekends in October, and Christmas Lights Wonderland weekends from after Thanksgiving Day through New Years Eve in December. You can find the museum on Museum Avenue, the I-70 access road that runs parallel to the interstate on the southeast side of Greenville, Exit 45.
American Heritage Railroad
The American Heritage Railroad — a 15” gauge railroad with approximately 1 mile of mainline track — is located on the grounds of the American Farm Heritage Musuem. Open May–Oct 1st Saturdays, special occasions, Halloweenville Train runs Friday and Saturday nights in October, Christmas Light Display with train rides Thanksgiving Weekend through the last weekend of the year. Plus Annual Train Show each June featuring toy/model RR displays, vendors with toy trains & equipment, books, memorabilia, and more!
Lil’ Red Barn
Lil’ Red Barn Museum (on the grounds of the American Farm Heritage Museum) features displays of farm life of a by-gone era. Exhibits include general seed store and farm life. Hours of operation are from 10am–2pm during the months of May through October. The museum is also open by appointment and during special events.
Richard W. Bock Sculpture Museum
The Richard W. Bock Museum is located on College Avenue two blocks east of Greenville’s downtown square in the historic Almira College House. The renovated house was the original Almira College, a school for girls begun in 1855. The museum consists of over 300 plaster and bronze sculptures done by Richard Bock, a sculptor working in the early 20th century. A few items of Frank Lloyd Wright’s, an associate of Bock, are also on display. Tour hours are Saturday 10am–2pm. Plus open by appointment or by chance! Bond County Museum
The Bond County Historical Society’s museum is located in a three-story turretted home built in 1900. The north parlor has Victorian period furnishings including an 1840s piano from the founders of Almira College. Other rooms contain a wide variety of exhibits that tell the story of Bond County. Historical exhibits are changed and updated each year making for a vibrant, relevant museum. The museum is open admission-free on Saturdays 10am—Noon (Year Round); Sundays 1—3pm (June—August). Call or email to arrange a guided tour, special group tour, or to visit during non-posted hours.
DeMoulin Museum
Although one of today’s leading makers of band uniforms, DeMoulin Bros. & Co. began in a most peculiar way in 1892—manufacturing fraternal lodge initiation devices and regalia. Visitors to the DeMoulin Museum can see crazy contraptions like the bucking goat, trick chairs, a lung tester, lifting and spanking machine, and guillotine. Embroidery work including band and military uniforms is also displayed. A kid and family friendly museum! Hours of operation: (June–August) Friday 1–3pm; Saturday 10am–2pm; Sunday 1–3pm. (September–May) Saturday 10am–2pm. The museum is also open by appointment.
data-format="text"Hill’s Fort Stockade & Buildings
Hill’s Fort was one of the first forts created in the early 1800s to protect settlers from Indian attacks. Currently at the American Farm Heritage Museum, cabins, stockade and blockhouse have been constructed as they would have looked around the time of the War of 1812. The fort’s actual site was located southwest of Greenville. The fort is open to the public the first Saturday of the month from May to October, the last weekend of July when the AHFM has their big tractor show, and during special Living History events (see Festivals below) including Christmas at the Fort (the day after Thanksgiving through December 31). One-Room School Museum
Located on the corner of Beaumont Ave. and Wyatt St., Bond County One-Room School Museum is only open by appointment and during special events. It is an actual one-room school house furnished with items that came from the more than 70 one-room school houses that once operated in Bond County making it an interesting visit. Please call to arrange a visit.
Marcoot Jersey Creamery
This is a working dairy farm that also makes and sells cheese. Their specialty is cheese that ages in their underground cellars. Ice cream, yogurt and other dairy and farm products are available. Depending on the time of day, visitors are welcome to observe various activities such as feeding, cow milking and cheese making. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 10am–4pm, Saturday 10am–3pm, and Sunday closed. Closed on all major holidays. Call to arrange a tour.
Abraham Lincoln Historical Site
Abraham Lincoln spoke in Greenville during his Senate race with Stephen Douglas in 1858. Although the two candidates did not debate each other, they both spoke in Greenville at the same location just one month apart. The DAR has placed a stone at the site to commemorate the speech.
Ronald Reagan Historical Site
A plaque marks the site of a visit from Ronald Reagan who spoke at the southeast comer of the courthouse lawn when he campaigned for president in October 1980.
Soldier’s Monument
A resolution was made in 1899 to erect a monument to the county men who served in the Civil War. The Bond County Soldier’s Monument located on the south courthouse lawn was dedicated in 1903 on the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga. Original cannonballs were sent to the government for scrap metal in World War II.
Murals
“Trompe l’oeil,” or fool the eye, murals decorate Greenville’s downtown area. Currently a total of Four murals (out of an original seven) decorate Greenville’s buildings.
The murals were created by local artist, John Hubbell. The murals are three-dimensional in appearance.
Additional murals are located on the sides of Mario’s Pizza (111 West College Ave.) by artist Christina Hardin and LOST+FOUND (206 West Oak St.) by illustrator Sophia Nelson Perez.
Visitors to Greenville enjoy photographing themselves as if they are part of the murals.
Festivals & Special Events
Airstravaganza
The Greenville Pilots Assoc. and the Greenville Airport Authority sponsor the Airstravaganza, Fly-In, and Open House at Greenville Airport. Watch for the date in September/October. The Greenville Municipal Airport is located 2 1/2 miles south of Interstate 70 on Illinois Rt. 127.
Bond County Cruise-Ins
Several times a year Bond County Cruise-Ins holds their events. Follow them on their Facebook page for dates and venues! All licensed makes and models, cars, trucks, motorcycles welcomed—vintage or new! 50/50 drawing & food stand proceeds to benefit a local charity. Admission is a donation to local charity!
Bond County Fair
The Bond County Fair at Bond County Fairgrounds takes place the first week of August. It features a carnival, livestock exhibitions, western horse show, tons of food, 4H activities and community building competitions (Agricultural Products, Floriculture, Photography & Arts, Textiles, Culinary, Youth Projects). Plus grandstand events such as a truck and tractor pull, the Miss, Jr Miss, and Little Miss Pageants & Talent Show, demolition derby, rodeo, parade and fireworks finale.
CheeseFest
This annual June event at Marcoot Jersey Creamery has an on-the-farm focus. Enjoy walking around their pasture having fun seeing farm animals, playing games, and enjoy lunch with Marcoot’s famous grilled cheese sandwiches and freshly fried cheese curds. Admission is FREE!
Citywide Yard Sale
Citywide yard sales in Greenville are scheduled for each Spring and Fall. Up to 200 sales are planned all throughout the city, put on by private citizens, multi-families, and nonprofits. Food stands are also available. There is no cost to participate or to be included on the map. Shoppers and pickers come from miles around! A few days before the event, yard sale maps are made available at the Greenville Municipal Building, at the Greenville Police Department, and on the city’s website, GreenvilleIllinois.com.
Come Home For Christmas
Come Home For Christmas downtown celebration is held the Saturday following Thanksgiving and is sponsored by the City of Greenville and Greenville Chamber of Commerce. Don’t miss the lighted Christmas parade, numerous musical programs, museum open houses, vendors, model trains, free food from local churches, the iceless ice skating rink, and more.
Fall Fest on the Farm
Join Marcoot Jersey Creamery for their annual FREE, family-friendly FALL FEST ON THE FARM! Enjoy walking around their pasture having fun seeing farm animals, playing games, and enjoy lunch with our famous grilled cheese sandwiches and freshly fried cheese curds!
Farm Heritage Days
Heritage Days is held the fourth weekend in July and features tractor pulls, tractor-cade, field demonstrations, antique truck and engine displays, live music, narrow-gauge railroad, Hill’s Fort activities, food, vendors and MORE. Admission is $10 for a 3-day armband. Kids under 12 are free.
Fourth Fest
Bond County Fourth Fest brings quality entertainment and fireworks to downtown Greenville each year to celebrate Independence Day. It’s two days of live music, food and beverage stands, rides and games for the kids, and great summer memories with friends and family!
Halloweenville
Enjoy the frights and sights of Halloweenville at American Farm Heritage Museum! Fri/Sat nights all October long. Children’s Costume Contest, Pumpkin Painting, narrow-gauge railroad “Jack-O-Lantern Express”, Games, Prizes, Food, and MORE.
Hill’s Fort Rendezvous
Hill’s Fort Rendezvous is one weekend of September at American Farm Heritage Museum. Free entry. Friday is School Kids Day. Find re-enactors from the Colonial and War of 1812 era, traders, vendors, music, and living history demonstrations. Tours of the 1800s reconstructed Hill’s Fort, modeled on a structure that stood southwest of Greenville.
Hummingbird Festival
Stoecklin’s Orchard hosts their annual Hummingbird festival each Summer. Watch up close as a licensed bird bander captures and bands hummingbirds! This event is Free, Open to the public & Family friendly. Bring your lawn chairs, Food will be available. The Hummingbird Festival is held on a Saturday in June.
Greenville Museum Day
Greenville will be buzzing with activities each annual Museum Day. Five museums will be open to tour with extended hours and special programing indoors and out. Admission is free, however, donations are welcome.
Paws In The Park
This Saturday in Autumn is a fun filled day full of lots of things to do for everyone who loves dogs and puppies—whether they own one themselves or not! Paws in the Park is a benefit for Bond County Humane Society and has been hosted by Double J Doggie Play N Stay and by the Bond County Fair Association. Look for contests to enter your dog into, professional pet photos, food truck(s), silent auction, K9 demos, microchipping clinic, dunk tank, Kid Zone, vendors, raffles, and more!
Spring Fling Festival
Come enjoy American Farm Heritage Museum’s FREE tractor, gas engine and car parts swap meet, flea market and craft vendors. You can also take a train ride (fee per person), explore historic Hill’s Fort, visit the Lil’ Red Barn and more! Throughout the afternoon, enjoy a ton of BBQ samples from teams at the Smok’n on the Farm BBQ Competition!
